Protocols

Protocols are rules that govern how communication takes place in networks. Without this rules communication will be more difficult. Protocols help format the message, define the way devices share information, and how to terminate and initiate communications. The organizations that create networking protocols are Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Well-known Protocols:

Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)
  • Transport Layer
  • Connection-oriented
  • Sequencing
  • Checksum

User Datagram Protocol (UDP)

  • Transport Layer
  • Connectionless
  • No guarantee on delivery of package

Internet Protocol (IP)

  • Network Layer
  • How and where data should be delivered
  • Connectionless
  • Unreliable
